Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? And how about giving a sweet treat to a special someone? Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and here is a perfect easy way to dress up a yummy treat and make it extra special for MOM.
Look how pretty these are! How special would you feel if you were handed one of these tasty treats?
And what makes this even easier is knowing you can find so many already made tasty treats at your local grocer’s bakery. It’s gifting made easy…thanks to your grocer’s bakery department!
I recently picked up a few bakery treats that caught my eye. Big blueberry muffins are perfect for Mother’s Day breakfast in bed. And I couldn’t resist this gorgeous jumbo chocolate cupcake. It was seriously calling my name!
And I know I could never make these strawberry swirl cupcakes look so perfect.
But what I do know is how to dress them up and make them all look even more scrumptious and special—with hand-dipped dyed coffee filters!
Yep, this is one of the simplest craft and gift ideas ever. And you probably already have all the materials you need in you kitchen right now.
To make the colored coffee filter flowers I used:
- white coffee filters (these come in either small or larger size. I used the smaller (for 4-6 cups of brewing) for the regular sized cupcakes, and the larger ones (for the 6-10 cups of coffee brewing) for the giant cupcake and large muffin)
- food coloring (I used pink, yellow, and purple neon food coloring plus blue food coloring)
- water
- bowls
- paper towels
Here is how to you dip dye coffee filters:
I used a ceramic bowl wide enough to hold my coffee filters upside-down. I poured about 1/2 cup of water in the bottom, added a few drops of food coloring, stirred and then dipped about 6-10 coffee filters in the colored mixture at once.
I let the dye soak into the coffee filters for just a few seconds. It will soak up the dye super quickly. In less than 3 seconds you will have a stack of colored coffee filters. I pulled them out of the dye before it hit the bottom of the filters and immediately put them on a paper towel lined plate or tray. If the bottoms get soaked, then they tend to flatten out and loose their “cupcake” shape.
I set out four different bowls, with four different color food dye mixtures. And I had a baking tray all set and lined with paper towels.
And when they were half dry I double-dipped a few or them, giving them a deeper color and mixing some of the colors together, like the yellow and pink to make a pretty orange color at the ends.
Then, you just need to let them dry. I set them outside to dry in the sun. They do dry lighter than what they come out directly from the dye.
After they were dry, it was a matter of taking 3-6 of them, fluffing them up and creating a pretty colorful “flower” base to rest my tasty treats on.
You can put multiple colors together and create a really pretty rainbow flower effect.
Or give a yummy chocolate treat a perfect pop of Spring color like this vibrant neon pink.
How pretty is that?
Dress it up with a cupcake flag or tag, and you have an instant Mother’s Day treat fit for a queen!

The best mom in my world hugs me every time she sees me. She tells me how much she misses me. She makes me feel loved and and active member of her attention. She makes me feel beautiful and wanted and loved and that I belong. I couldn’t ask for a better or more beautiful role model.
These are SO cute!!
I’ve got two awesome moms – it’s hard to choose the best!
The VERY BEST MOM I know is my daughter Denise. She had to wait for 10 years to become a MOM. But thank the good Lord we all were blessed with 2 beautiful boys. She is wonderful with the boys not only their friend but a strick disciplinarian. She is there to help any kid who might need some mothering taking them in and treating them as her own.. Along with all her fur babies …Hands down She is a GREAT MOTHER!
My awesome Mom is now an angel watching over, 14 yrs now. She’s always been there for me and still today gives hints that she’s not ever to far away. Momma’s always had a great sense of humor, a quick wit. Always a ton of fun. I miss her very much. <3 Love you Momma.

My “Best Mom” sadly passed away last month after a brutal battle with Pancreatic Cancer, but not after raising six wonderful kids who in turn gave her eleven fabulous grandchildren to spoil & adore. We all miss you mom and hope that your first Mother’s Day without us is better for you than it will be for us. Thanks Pauline for your awesome blog, crafting occupies my mind and helps me forget my sorrow, at least for a little bit. We made your toothpick painted wooden hearts this weekend at my 10 year old daughter’s – Peace, Love, Pigs & P.J.’s party – thanks for the instructional, the girls loved the craft!
My mom has shown me what it is to be loved unconditionally! She has made me a good mom to my 5 children! Happy Mothers Day!
So cute! And you posted this floral cuteness on May Day. I see what you did there 😉 I am totally using this for teacher appreciation day at my daughters school next week. Because – cupcakes.
The best mom in the world is the unconventional one. She’s the one who will embarrass you when your friends come over. She will always tell the loudest at my lacrosse games. She hugs me, and tells me she loves me daily. She drives me everywhere, and she has since birth.
But there is one thing that makes her the best…
I have vomited her. And she kept me.
So cute!
Ah I feel bad. I just spoke not so nicely to my mom over the phone. She loves me anyway. I know my girls will be the same to me someday, and I will have to remember my mom’s unconditional love to me. My mom is a great example in so many other ways too, in her career and in her creativity and her fearlessness.
These are so cute! The best mom in my world is my kid’s godmother who loves them so much even thought they are a handful!
My mother because she not only has love for her kids, but for other kids as well. I would always get jealous that my neighbors would come over and my mother would be super nice to them. Would feed them take care of them like her own. Now that I am an adult my self I will admit I would still get jealous, but I finally just realized that my mom is one special person and because she has a big heart the kids or adults had some kind of connection with her. The kids next door grew up and had kids of there own now there kids come over and call my mom grandma!
Cute project — and super easy!
My mom is super rad. She taught me how to grab my life by the reins and make it my own. She was never one to let life just happen to her — she makes her life happen!
My daughter is a first time Mom to my sweet little grandson, and she is amazing!!

My mother passed away in 2005, so I’m the best mom I know now.
So cute! What a great idea for Mother’s Day. Love, love, love these!
The Best Mom in my world is the one who loves me unconditionally, listens to me whenever I need. I love my mom, Happy Mother’s Day!
My mom is the best! She’s incredibly giving and nurturing. She’s now a retired pastor, and her health is failing, but I love her so much!
I have a couple of moms that I buy things for on mothers day. Both of them are so giving and kind!
My mom is awesome! She speaks her mind. 😀
The best mom in the world may not be with us here today but her spirit of love, dedication, spiritual guidance and making family first live with us even 22 years after her death. She was also the best cook and crafter I have ever met!
My Mom was a wonderful Mother and I am so thankful that I had her!
p.s. Your cupcake wrappers are gorgeous! Pinned these babies to make in the future.
The best mom in my world IS my mom! She adopted me at a young age and since then has taken the best care of me- I’m so grateful.
